When Schehera approaches the Sultan to warn him about his Queen’s treachery, she catches him pleasuring himself in bed. The Sultan decides he ought to dispose of Schehera, a mere slave, to prevent unsavoury rumours from spreading around his palace. Although she isn’t beautiful, Schehera offers to satisfy the Sultan with a story, and the Sultan agrees to spare her if he is sufficiently entertained.

The Sultan is so impressed with her tale he demands she return the following night. He does not, however, believe her accusation that the Queen has been dealing with a djinni in order to overthrow him. Not just any djinni either, but the succubus Astoreth, who ruled the city in ancient times and who used men as cattle before selling their souls to other djinn. Only Schehera can thwart the Queen’s plans, but how can protect the Sultan if he refuses to take advice from a slave?

Schehera tells new stories night after night. As she grows in confidence, she uses her tales to subtly educate the Sultan about the state of the city, the suffering of the common people, and the danger of the djinn in the shadows. Although she is only a slave, in her stories she can speak with the voices of emirs, viziers, sailors and merchants; each with a chance of arousing the Sultan and saving her city.

When the brothers’ travels take them to Peru, Sal meets a beautiful and mystical woman by a desert oasis. She reads his fortune, predicting his brother will be arrested that night. She insists there is only one way Sal will see his brother again. He must become her apprentice, fall in love at Machu Picchu, and protect her against the various factions trying to steal her foresight –namely a priest, a hacker and Sal’s old bosses in the Yakuza. Sal laughs at the mystic, certain that no one can see the future.

Until he returns home to find police tape across his door…

At first, Sal travels with the mystic with a plan to find his brother and then sell her to the Yakuza. But at the opportune moment, as he unites with his brother and the Yakuza agents close in, he realises that he has indeed made the terrible mistake of falling in love with her.
